Difficulty in swallowing

There are multiple reasons behind the difficulty in swallowing.

  • Patients with acid reflux may have erosions in food pipe that can lead to difficulty in swallowing.
  • Fungal infection in the food pipe.
  • Damage to esophageal lining due to a pill- pill esophagitis.
  • Food allergy of the esophagus known as Eosinophilic esophagitis.
  • Muscular rings and web formation can cause difficulty in swallowing.
  • When the lower end of the esophagus fails to relax in response to food, the condition is known as Achalasia cardia, can present with such complaints.
  • Tumor in esophogus or upper end of stomach can cause difficulty in swallowing.

  • This is diagnosed by means of endoscopy.
  • Ct scan of chest and abdomen, Esophageal manometry are some other tests which are required to characterize the disease.
