Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
High-Precision Diagnostic Tool for Gastrointestinal & Pancreatic Disorders
What Is an Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)?
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is an advanced diagnostic procedure that combines endoscopy and ultrasound technology to produce highly detailed images of the digestive tract and surrounding organs. It allows doctors to examine the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, and lymph nodes with exceptional clarity.
At Alfa Gastro & Liver Care Hospital, EUS is used to diagnose complex gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary conditions at an early and treatable stage.
How Does Endoscopic Ultrasound Work?
During an EUS procedure, a thin flexible tube called an endoscope, fitted with a miniature ultrasound probe at its tip, is gently passed through the mouth into the digestive tract.
The ultrasound probe emits sound waves that create high-resolution images of internal organs and tissues from very close proximity—making EUS far more accurate than traditional imaging tests like CT scans or MRI in many cases.
EUS can also be combined with fine needle aspiration (FNA) to collect tissue or fluid samples for biopsy.
What Is EUS Used For & When Should It Be Done?
Endoscopic Ultrasound is recommended when detailed internal evaluation is required, especially when other tests are inconclusive.
EUS Is Commonly Used For:
-
Pancreatic tumors, cysts, and pancreatitis
-
Bile duct blockages and gallbladder disease
-
Staging of gastrointestinal cancers
-
Submucosal GI lesions (growths beneath the lining)
-
Enlarged lymph nodes
-
Evaluation of unexplained abdominal pain
-
EUS-guided biopsy (FNA) for accurate diagnosis
Your gastroenterologist may recommend EUS if symptoms persist or if precise diagnosis is critical for treatment planning.
What Happens During an Endoscopic Ultrasound Procedure?
-
The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis
-
You will receive sedation to ensure comfort
-
The endoscope is passed through the mouth into the digestive tract
-
Ultrasound images are captured in real time
-
If needed, biopsy samples may be taken safely
-
The procedure is painless and well-tolerated
Patients are closely monitored throughout the procedure for safety.
How Long Does the Endoscopic Ultrasound Procedure Take?
-
The EUS procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes
-
Additional time may be required if biopsy is performed
-
Patients usually rest for a short period after the procedure
-
Most patients can go home the same day
What to Expect After Endoscopic Ultrasound
After the procedure:
-
Mild throat discomfort may occur temporarily
-
You may feel drowsy due to sedation
-
Eating and drinking can usually resume after a few hours
-
Biopsy results (if taken) are typically available within a few days
-
Normal activities can usually be resumed the next day
Your doctor will explain the findings and guide you on the next steps, if any treatment is required.
